I was excited because I was so happy to find a smoothie recipe for my weight gain goals that also fit in to a Ketogenic diet and tasted good.
In fact, this berry protein shake doesn’t just taste good, it tastes AMAZING!
And I am excited for you guys to try it now!
This is one low carb mixed berry protein smoothie you are going to want to earmark because it tastes like dessert!
Why this Chocolate protein berry weight gain smoothie will be added to your favourite smoothie recipes list
It’s a mixed berry protein smoothie that tastes like dessert
There can be a real risk with smoothies that it can feel like you are forcing down fruits and vegetables in a quick and easy way that does not taste good.
Well, not so with this high protein low carb smoothie!
This actually tastes like dessert!
The mixture of the cream cheese, chocolate and berries makes it taste like something you would expect to get at a wedding, not a smoothie you have made at home.
This is why mixing protein powder with things other than water can be so effective.
By turning this into a berry protein shake, you end up with a much better flavor than simple protein powder and water.
It’s a highly versatile frozen berry smoothie recipe
You are not stuck to using one particular kind of berry for this recipe.
Any red berry will work.
Red berries go so well with chocolate that you really can’t get it wrong.
Whatever berry you put in, you will end up with a mixed berry protein smoothie that tastes great!
On top of this, if you want to make it even more of a low carb fruit smoothie, you can reduce the amount of berries and add more Stevia to account for the loss of sweetness.
Want less cream cheese for less fat content? No problem!
Just reduce the water volume as well, so that the smoothie keeps the same thickness.
Don’t have dark chocolate?
Well, do you have cocoa powder?
Often it is quite low carb and can make a good substitute for actual chocolate pieces.
This is a Keto weight gain smoothie that actually tastes good!
When looking for a Keto smoothie recipe for weight gain, you really run the risk of finding bad tasting smoothies that try and overload you with fat calories.
Sure, they may be Keto, but they often don’t give you other nutrients you want on a Ketogenic diet, particularly protein.
You need a high protein low carb smoothie when you are trying to gain weight on a Keto diet.
And it’s always annoying when the options out there just don’t taste good.
The great thing with this Keto weight gain smoothie is that it has a bunch of protein in it, too, rather than just being a simple fat bomb smoothie, it has fruit in the way of frozen mixed berries, and, very importantly, it tastes good!
That’s thanks to the mixture of cream cheese (to thicken and add the fat calories), the chocolate, the chocolate protein powder, and the sweetness form the berries and Stevia.
Yes, it’s a high fat protein shake. But it’s a great tasting one!
Things to look out for and swaps
In order to make sure the chocolate and the frozen berries mix well in to the final smoothie, you will be better off blending them first before anything else, otherwise you tend to get left with chunks of either in the smoothie.
If you are using fresh berries, then you can add them with the rest of the ingredients and just turn the chocolate in to a powder.
As with any chocolate protein smoothie recipe, the final flavor is going to depend greatly on the chocolate protein powder you use.
I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein, as it has a great chocolate flavor and is low in carbs.
If you want your protein berry smoothie to taste good, make sure you have a good tasting chocolate protein powder before proceeding!
If you are trying to keep this as low carb as possible, make sure you get a low carb dark chocolate.
As a general rule, the darker the chocolate, the lower the carb count.
Also, the darker the chocolate, the more intense the chocolate flavor, so you end up needing less for a great taste (and, with that, fewer calories, fewer carbs, less fat, etc).
Supplements you can add to your chocolate berry protein smoothie
This may be a low carb fruit smoothie, but it has a really deep flavor.
No bland low-carb taste here! What that means is you can get away with adding supplements you may take as part of your daily routine, without greatly affecting the taste.
If you want to throw in your Creatine, Psyllium Husks, daily vitamins and minerals or something else, the flavor profile of the chocolate and berries should mask it fairly well.
